Soffit Building Question

2 Attachment(s)
I have a question regarding building a large soffit to enclose an I-Beam, ductwork, gas line, water line, etc in a basement finishing project.

The soffit size is roughly 15' L x 7' W x 1.5' H. The floor joists above are engineered or I-Beam style.

My current plans are to build a frame with 2x4's then finish with drywall.

My questions are:
  • How can I safely attach to the floor joists?
  • Is using 2x4's a good plan?
  • Any other advice on how to build the soffit or tie into the walls on either side?
Here are a few photos showing the space to be enclosed:

Hmmm....I would have thought this would have been jumped on by now. Everyone must be asleep.

1. Nails or screws if using lumber. I prefer screws when using steel.

2. Not my choice. I much prefer steel. Lighter and faster IMPHO.

3. Build perimeter walls first then build your sofits to meet them. Typically build a ladder type sofit wall on each side the connect the two with your material of choice. I use steel wall track, steel studs and then hat track to connect. Some like to use 1\2" plywood and actually build a box around them. Never tried that way.

Is that a union at the end of your gas line, may want to check with your local AHJ on enclosing that, need a permit anyway for insurance liability and electrical anyway. http://publicecodes.cyberregs.com/ic..._24_sec022.htm
