Smoothing out old surface for new tile

Just removed old tile. How do I smooth out old bumpy surface for new tile? What methods do I use?

A few more details please---

The 'bumpy surface'---are you talking about a concrete floor, drywall, plywood or something else??

Sometimes you will grind the surface--other times ,removing the bumpy surface and replacing with fresh drywall or subfloor is best--

other times burying the old surface under self leveling compound is called for.

If it's just the old thinset, use a floor scraper or hammer and chisel to knock out all of the loose material, then vaccuum it all up, then you should be all set to tile over it.
