Skylight ceiling opening

I'm planning the installation of a skylight for my sisters house. The house is a ranch with about 3 feet of attic above the room. Is there a guideline of how large the opening in the ceiling should be, for example, if the sklight ic 24" x 36".......the thought was to frame out the ceiling larger to maximize the light that can come in. I'm wondering if there is a standard to g by, or anyones good experiences.

thank you!

Skylight ceiling opening

It is generally accepted that splaying the light tunnel disperses light over a wider area into the room, But the angle of the sides is a matter of individual visual taste , there is no "rule" that I know of. I personally do not like the tunnel to be splayed at all, it does not look good to me personally.
