Shimming Sheetrock?

I have a contractor hanging sheetrock for us. He wants to use shingles instead of shims. I don't like this idea. Anybody want to comment?
Thanks....

Not a great idea. Use real flat wood shims, if it's way off you can just sister a new full lenght piece of 2X.

Why isn't it a good idea? Is it poisonous? Will we smell the petroleum? Why? Need a good reason to stop the contractor.

Is he using asphalt shingles or cedar shingles?

I've seen cedar shingles (split to 1 inch wide) used as shims before. In fact, I purchased some wood shims from Home Depot a few years ago and they were just like cedar shakes but narrower.

Singles

Can you imagine tacking a 3 tab single to framing then covering with drywall. I have seen some crazy stuff before. SOmeone doing this for whatever reasons really wouldn't surprise me. hahah. I really hope these shingles are the wood variety.
