Replacing windows with French doors

I would pull off some siding to see what kind of header is in there, siding is easy to nail back on, easier than replacing drywall. If it's not a continuous header then a new header definitely needs to be put in. If it is continuous then you need to check the size of it to see if it can span that distance supporting that roof load. You need to know if those posts in the middle of the window are taking any of the load before pulling them out.

I'm not saying your idea is worse than mine, but for exploratory purposes - how is it "easier" to remove siding, sheathing and possibly house wrap and replacing it all instead of pulling a piece of drywall?

Not really easier, but time wise taking off the siding would be a lot faster for me. If it's wood siding I can probably take it off and put it back on within an hour. If I was taking drywall off, that would require new mud and taping, new texturing, and new paint when it comes time to put it back on. That's at least a couple days to go through the process of letting everything dry between each stage.

Gotcha. I was looking at it from the point of having to do drywall work on the inside no matter what since the door is narrower than the windows currently are.

Replacing windows with French doors

Hey everyone I wanted to say thanks for all of the info!

Also, I wanted to add that I decided to tackle the project myself and have completed the tough parts.

I have run into on big snag! I don't have enough siding to fill in and cover the new wall I have created. At a minimum I need one piece about 24" long. I could really use more than that to repair some of what I damaged during demo and reinstall. I live in Jacksonville FL and I can't find aluminum siding anywhere. Any ideas?

A: Find a way to "cannibalize" it from somewhere else on the house.
B: Make one wall "different" ... IE white vinyl?
C: Search craigslist for aluminum siding.

Feels good doesn't it? I remember I was SO nervous cutting a 7 foot hole in my house, but it felt great when the door was in.

When my parents did something similar, this is what they ended up doing. They couldn't find an exact match, so my father took some off of the back of the garage, and installed the new stuff back there where it wouldn't be noticeable.

Looks good so far!
have you checked Craigs List for siding? Maybe someone is doing some demo and has a stack.

I have gotten the finishing touches taken care of and cannibalizing became my only option. I just slipped a piece off from below the level of the deck which I replaced with vinyl.
