replacing rail and balusters.
I have an older house with a very secure starting newel. The stair rail and balusters need to be replaced. The rail ends in wall where a rosette will be attached. How can I attach a new rail to the existing newel and rosette? The newel is a 4 x 4 post secured about 12 inches below the floor line.

Traditional connection is done by a rail bolt.

Replacing rail and balusters.
Yes Ron. I will use the rail bolt for either the rosette on the wall to connect to the rail or to the immovable newel to rail connection. If I use the bolt to attach to the newel, I need to raise the rail slightly to attach the balusters into the channel under the rail and then attach the rail to the rosette that is attached to the wall. My problem is attaching the rail to the rosette because I will not be able to get the bolt on the rosette to enter into the channel on the rail.
I am sorry, I think I said this was a stair rail, it is a landing rail going straight across from the immoveable newel to the rosette on the opposite wall.
The only thing that I can think of is to put a longer channel in the bottom of the rail to accommodate the entire bolt and slowly turn it to attach it to the rosette with a locking pliers. I will then need a bigger plug for the bottom of the rail to hide the bolt. Is there another way of attaching the rail?

For the bottom rail, attach the rosette to the bottom rail and screw the rosette to the wall. No rail bolt needed.
