Replacing Hardwoods with Carpet
I will be removing some hardwood floors as part of a larger remodeling project. Underneath the hardwoods there is a layer of felt. Underneath the felt there is the sub-floor. This sub-floor is what I have a question about.
The existing sub-floor rest directly on top of the floor joists and is made from 1X6s angled at 45°. Between each 1X6 there is a small gap -- about 1/8". I want to put carpet down over this sub-floor. My guess is that I need to lay down a thin sheet of 1/8" plywood -- over the existing felt -- before laying down padding and carpet. So, my new sub-floor would be: • 1X6s (existing)Does that sound about right? For those who can't help but ask -- I am using the hardwoods in another part of the house. |

You cannot buy 1/8" plywood. Thinnest I'm aware of is 1/4". You really need to use 1/2" though. The felt was installed to keep the hardwood from "rubbing" against the 1x's an causing squeaks. I don't see any harm in leaving it. Others more knowledgeable in this particular field may say otherwise.....
