Replacing existing exterior door and jamb

Hi - I'm replacing an existing exterior door with a pre-hung new door. The hinge side of the existing jamb is flush up against the rough opening stud, and there is about a 2 inch gap on the handle side of the existing jamb. My question is in regard to this: in replacing the door unit, I'd like ideally to center the new jamb in the rough opening, which would create about an inch gap on both sides, and then shim on both sides. The reason for this is for appearance, as it will look better centered. Will it be a problem for the entire hinge side of the door to be shimmed, as opposed to being flush against the stud?

Any thoughts on this are most appreciated. - Thanks!

Yes, but I would fir it in with double ” plywood instead of a big stack of shims.
