Replace Window with French Door--can I do this?
I would like to replace a dining room window with French doors that will lead out onto a deck (that is yet to be built). I am uncertain of the cost and scope of the project. I am reasonably handy/good diy'er, but I have not done anything like this before. I would like to do it myself, but I am willing to spend more and have it done for me if necessary to achieve professional results.
The approximate finished opening of the window is 70" x 82", including the transom window. From the floor the height is roughly 82" to the bottom of the transom, and about 106" to the top of the transom. I would like to try and get some basics answered before I tear up the trim to get the rough dimensions.
1. In general, how big a project is this?
2. How would this work with the transom? I would hope to leave it there and install the doors below the window. Is this possible? Do I have or do I need a header (lintel?) up there somewhere?
3. What sort of contractor would I call for an estimate and where would I look? I have no leads/contacts. Is there such a thing as a pro that would walk me through me doing the work myself--like a consultant? It seems like it would be a win-win. Easy money for him, piece of mind for me. What do you think?
from the measurements you gave it sounds like a 6' door will fit,not too sure about integrating the old transome into the new door tho,you may want to think about getting the transome from the door manufacturer
not too hard a job,but the doors can be pretty heavy
