Repairing 2x4 foot drywall in ceiling

Hey all...I need to fix a 2 by 4 foot hole in a ceiling. I'm thinking I cut out a piece to fit....mud...tape....mud....repeat after drying.....?

I've read about putting plywood over the seams to lessen chance of a bulge? Anyone ever do this before? Thanks....Joe

You can use plywood, strapping, whatever wood, that can hold drywall screws...

I have used Sheetrock brand drywall repair clips a couple of times and really liked them, no added weight and very easy to use.
