Repair Fixture Hole in Ceiling

lost80s Newbie   Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 8	Repair Fixture Hole in Ceiling I want to replace my 5" light fixture and put in a smaller 3" recess light -- is there a way to repair the hole in a ceiling that the 5" fixture will leave? I know how to do this with dry wall, but my ceiling is made of a much thicker "sheet roock type" material... what is it and how to I repair a hole?

Basically, you have to slowly fill in the hole. After several coats and sanding, you draw out the hole size desired, then score the line with a utility knife. Last, cut out the shape with your utility knife or router. __________________ - Build Well -

lost80s Newbie   Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 8	Repair Fixture Hole in Ceiling ok thanks - do you have idea what material ceilings are made of tho? It is much thicker than dry wall (like double the thickness) - but I can tell the material is the same.

wolffhomerepair Remodeling Contractor     Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: North Tonawanda NY Posts: 13	Repair Fixture Hole in Ceiling Sounds like plaster and plaster board. Usually about 3/4" thick. I just patched some of this last week. Atlantic is correct. Same technique as drywall.
