Removing wood panels
One of my room has 1960 wood panels on the walls. I am not sure whether there is a drywall or not underneath the wood panels.
I would like to add drywall to these walls. What are my options here ? 1) Should I have to remove the panels and then install drywall ? or 2) Is there way, I can stick in the drywall right on top of the framing ? If I have to remove the panels, is it easy ? How do I do it without damaging the drywall (if it is there underneath) ? http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/v...1/P1010028.jpg http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/v...1/P1010027.jpg http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/v...1/P1010026.jpg |

No one here is going to be able to tell you if the paneling was glued to the sheetrock if there is any.
Just remove an outlet cover and look on the sides. Not likly the drywall can be saved if it was glued on. You would have to also replace the drywall. |

Drywall over the paneling.
You will have to pull all receptacle's out the extra 1/2" also. Also, you could tape seams and skim drywall mud over the grooves (an entire skim coat as well) the paneling and paint. It would look just like drywall. Last edited by titanoman; 02-22-2012 at 10:18 AM. |

Not the way I would do it but you can use 1/4" with drywall adhestive and drywall screws not nails. There is really no need for 1/2 where the it would already be fully supported with the paneling and drywall behind it.
Your going to have to replace all the screws holding the switches and outlets with longer screws. |

is there a doorway that you can take a piece of casing off of?? you should be able to see if there is already drywall under the paneling.
I personally would tear the paneling off as well as any drywall (if it is there and has been damaged from glued on paneling). this gives opportunity to check things out and correct anything that needs to be fixed. or if you wanted to relocate some outlets, etc... |

Should be able to tell if there's rock behind the paneling by pushing on it between the studs.

I just did this in our home which was built in the early 80s.
3/8 paneling glued and nailed directly to the studs which wasn't too "spongy" when you pushed on it. When I took into account all the window and door jambs that would have to be extended, electrical I wanted to move, tearing it down made more sense. |

Since it has a drywall on one side, how do I take off framing now without making a lot of damage to drywall ? |
