removing paint from interior brick?
Hello! I am new to this forum, but I'd love some informed advice.

I am considering buying a modern townhome. It is a bit of a stretch for me, because I am an old house lover (current place was built in 1904), but the location and layout are great. One problem is that at some point the lovely interior brick walls were painted with a high gloss white paint. I've seen the original brick in a neighboring unit and I love it. It really warms up the pretty sterile space. My real estate agent assures me that I can get the paint off, but research on the web suggests that it can be very difficult. Has anyone ever stripped paint from brick walls? Can it really be done successfully? I'd likely hire professionals and do this before I move in . . ., but I'd rather not spend money in the attempt without the promise of a good outcome.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Yes, it can be done, though you may strip the paint only to find out why they painted it to begin with.....

Sand, or walnut blast it
The paint can be removed with a sand blaster. Alternatively, use crushed walnut shells. I'd want to try and find out if it was painted for aesthetics or for some other reason.

There's a product called, Peel-a-Way you can use. It might take a few applications, but it should take of the paint.

You may find that you never get it all off. Abrasive blasting will help but is hard on the brick and you will want to use a pro that has the equipment and know how. Make sure you mask off your floors so you do not damage them grinding the abrasive under foot. The abrasive will go airborne and you will be living with it in your space for awhile.
