Removing concrete stone from fireplace - Need How To Advice

I want to tile my fireplace with slate. There is currently older blocks of stone or rock on the fireplace. My options are to remove the blocks or go over the blocks with tile. The blocks are un-even so tiling over them may be difficult. How would I remove the blocks? It is a see through fireplace.

I agree on the electric chisel. I have also seen people add a small wall around the original fireplace--if you have the room.

For me it wasn't that hard to remove the brick. We have it down to the framing that was put around the insert itself. We have to replace the dry wall on the side and backer board on the front where we are going to put marble.

I did the removing of the brick with no problem. Large hammer and chiesel.
