I want to replace the shower wall and floor tiles with new tiles. The existing shower is about 20 years old but is in very good shape and has no leaks. My question is do I have to demolish the entire structure down to the studs and remove the old shower pan? Or can I just carefully remove the tiles and place the new tiles on the exiting surface?
Having installed the Dix System shower pan in a few different applications, as well as having installed the Schluter system, I can tell you that the Dix Systems shower pan is the easier of the two. It offers customizable drain and curb placement and can be prepped in under an hour. Start to finish, including installing the mortar base, the shower pan can be installed in about 3 hours total. Once the base mortar has cured, you're ready to tile. As well, this system does not require you to slope the sub floor, as sloping sticks are provided for the base slope. The screeds provided make obtaining the proper slope idiot proof. Check them out online at www.dixsystems.com.
