Is this remodeling contract complete enough?
My wife and I have a 30 year old house with some early deterioration of a few of the wooden window frames. But the windows and storm windows seem to be working fine: no excessive heating and cooling bills, and noise transmission is very little. We have talked to various contractors, who have discussed with us several different levels of upgrade: all the way from minor retouch of a few windows to complete replacement of all the storm windows and frames. Currently we are favoring (feel free to try to change our minds) one contractor (Bill) who suggested the idea of "casing out" all of our current windows. He was recommended to us, and his discussion of the steps he would use makes us think he would do a good job. But since we really don't know what questions we should be asking, I thought it would be good to post most details of the contract here, to let anybody who has more experience at this give us their input. What should I be asking about that isn't mentioned below? Thanks!
He broke the proposal up into pieces, so we could choose only the first, or only the first two, or all three parts:
#1: Remove Existing Front Entry door and Storm door and haul away; install new smooth fiberglass entry door #607 as discussed with Keith at K&K, including hardware and lock-set. Deposit of $620 is required to place order. Total: $1460.
$2: Case out exterior wood trim on Front lower triple DH window unit and 4 DH windows on RT side of home. Remove existing storm windows and re-hang after sills cased all the way into interior sill. Total: $895.
#3: Case out 13 additional windows remaining on the rear, 1st and 2nd floors, L/S (Left side) 2nd floor and Front 2nd floor. Total: $1625.
PS: Replace bad wood as needed to properly nail case-out and charge time and material for extra work.
