refinishing a wood picnic table

Last year we bought a Douglas-fir Wood furniture (picnic table) online. It has a light brown (color below) now we want to somehow refinish it and make it look like an old mature wood (dark brown). Any idea how we can achieve the dark color without having an expert do it for us? other than painting it with dark brown right away.

refinishing a wood picnic table

Thoroughly clean with TSP. If varnished, it would be best to strip that off, then start from scratch.
