Refinishing Cabinets with laminate sides

I have kitchen cabinets that are kinda old and ugly. I was going to get new doors to update the look and sand the existing frames...BUT while the front of the cabinet frames is wood, the sides of it seem to be laminate or something!!

What are my options? Can I cut a ultra thin piece of ply on the 3 exposed laminate sides and stain that? Should I just paint it all instead? Any other ideas?

You can get 1/4 plywood sheet and cut to fit the sides but you will have to do something to hide the ply. I use the 1/4 on the sides and just veneer the front so it hides the side of the plywood and everything can stained the same. Or get wide veneer to cover the sides.

You can get 1/8 inch plywood also. Does your face frame over hang the sides a little?
