product to cover stair risers

I bought my first house, the only carpet in the house was on the stairwell. It was covering oak stair treads and plywood(?) risers. The risers have tons of cosmetic damage to them (50-100 staple/nail holes per riser and Two different colors of paint).

What is the best product that I can use to cover the risers? I would like something paintable or at least a veneer product that offers a choice of colors. I do not want to try to match the existing wood treads with a similar material riser.

Looking for a simple affordable solution.

Thanks.

maybe a 3/8" AC plywood will work, you do not want the riser to be to thick because of the tread overhang...

Wood epoxy paste sanded smooth? Woodepox from Abatron is pretty easy to work with. You can tint it or paint it with no problems. Just trowel or drywall knife it on, let it set and sand. Must do some surface prep of course so you get adhesion but this is true of anything you pick.
