paneling replacement options

I recently removed an 8'x12' wall of 12"x12" mirrors from my dining room and discovered paneling behind it with drywall behind the paneling! The paneling now has about 5 spots about 1 inch by 1 inch of double sided tape from where each of the mirrors were.
I have determined that replacing the scratched up and cracked paneling will me much less time consuming than scraping over 600 old dried up squares.
Finally my question - what can I use other than the old style paneling or drywall to replace the existing paneling? I'm fairly handy but looking for something that can go up easily on top of drywall and can be painted if needed. Maybe something with a little bit of texture. Are there any 'new' kinds of paneling out there?
I have a feeling someone out there will have a very cool and simple idea!
Thanks, Tony
