panel home, nothing seems to be 16 on center

My home is a "panel" home from the 50's, consisting of offsite built walls sections (2x3s, maybe 5 feet wide or so). I'm noticing that nothing really seems to be 16 on center. Everything seems to be, maybe 15" and even then, once you get to the next panel, things are off again. It's really strange.

Were there different standards back then or what?

Anyone got any tricks for hanging drywall or cabinets and what not? I've just been measuring from a reference point and working with the bare walls to hit the studs. So far it seems to work fine, I just don't think I have any other options

It all depends on the person who setup the studs... really.... someone can decide to completely/partly not follow the standard...

I guess. All it means to me today is I have to chalk my lines ahead of time for every sheet. whatta pain.

Put blocking up for the cabinet hanging and it doesn't matter what the "on center" measurement is.

Could have simply been a new guy that just couldn't understand the concept of 16 OC.

(We had one of those a few years ago. We try to be patient with every knew guy. Basically, 99% of every wall or ceiling that we have him layout (or anything that had to be measured and laid out) ... would end up being off

- However, we wouldn't leave it that way. I would make him rip it all out. He spent more time ripping his "work" apart. I would end up assigning someone else to finish the work properly)
