Old Cast Iron Fireplace

I have an old cast iron fireplace and someone tiled over the floor right infront of it. All the tiles were broken to I took them up to see what was there. There was very nice marble but it was cracked too very badly. Under it was dirt/pebbles for about 10".

My original idea was to tile but I had no idea what I was getting into. I was thinking of taking out the remaining marble and dirt then filling with cement and tiling. Any ideas? What is the right thing to do?
