First thing you need to do is figure out whether or not your artex ceiling is asbestos - if so, you dont' want to just go scraping it away. If not, I would imagine you should be able to scrape it away, or rerock the ceiling with 3/8 drywall.

Your "huh" smily seems to indicate that you are somewhat taken back by my suggesting that it is possible that it is asbestos on you ceiling ... To my knowledge, unless your ceiling was constructed in the 90s or 2000s, the ONLY way to tell if your artex is asbestos is to have it tested. I could be wrong. This probably wasn't the best place to post this, quicker response probably would have come in other sections, but I'm sure some of the pros will weigh in soon. But providing its safe, I believe it will respond to wet scraping - but again, see what the pros say.

Oh, ha. I agree about the "yuk" factor too. Unfortunately, I think it was pretty common in older homes to use asbestos in Artex and rerocking might be your safest and easiest route and even then I'd wear a mask if I ever drilled into the ceiling for anything. I will post in another section asking for pro assistance.
