Is my new siding ugly!? Did I screw up!?

Okay, I'm not going to tell you all what I think, but rather let you give me your first impression of our project.

This is our home, it's a cookie cutter style house built in '00. Nothing fancy, but we are happy with it. This year we built a 2 story addition off the side (24x24 Cantilever). We didn't have the money to hire a full on siding contractor to give us recommendations etc, so we decided on our own. Our idea was to do a board and batten on the upstairs of the addition, and then re-side the knock out of the existing house to tie it together.

Unfortunately we aren't sure on the color we chose. What do you think? Does it look horrible? Also, do you have recommendations for the basement of the addition? (That is the part that is not sided yet). At this point we were just going to use the vertical wicker siding to try and tie it together, then add matching shutters on all windows, and be done with it.

Thoughts.....?

Thanks a lot!

Looks fine to me. I would try to match the darker horizontal siding. If you cannot get the same stuff I would continue with the siding you used above.

Ugly is a relative term. If you like it, then that's what matters.

Thanks for the input.

I agree, it's important that we like it... that's part of the problem, we're not sure how we feel about it yet.

I spoke with an exterior home painter and he also suggested we continue with the yellow-ish BnB on the lower portion. I'd love to do some form of masonry, but I feel like I would have to continue it to other areas, adding more work and more money to the budget I've already blown.

Next step we have to add the shutters to all the windows, which will help tie it all together, then we are also going to use something like these on the cantilever (in white)...

And matching ones on the knockout like this....

CHEERS!

I think it looks good. I would go with the greyish horizontal siding for the remainder bottom portion. Under the overhang in the middle of your house is horizontal so i would do horizontal under this overhang.

The picture is very dark, but it looks fine to me. I am with the others that the basement section should be Horizantal and the color of the other horitantal siding if you can match it.

Hey thanks everyone. I did a photoshop rendering of the suggestions and I have to agree with most... we are going to go with matching horizontal siding for lower level (here's the rendering below). Then add the corbels/brackets, should look pretty good. I still feel like we need to tie in the BnB somewhere on the garage, but that can be done this summer. Thanks everyone!

Very nice, might want to put some gutters on that bad boy as well so you do not get drainage issues.

Yeah CarNut, I agree with ya. I already had to upgrade to 2 sump crocks.

Doesn't it seem there is like a 30% factor for all of our home projects? You go into the initial project planning to spend X amount of dollars, and I swear it always ends up being X plus 30%!

Nice! I like the B&B siding on the addition and the way you tied it in by re-siding the knockout on the original home. The matching horizontal siding you photoshopped looks great too. My only suggestion is to find a way to make your front door/entryway more prominent as it looks a lil lost amongst all the windows.

Hey thanks guys!

KazzyK; you just gave my wife the ammunition she needed to put up a column and possibly replace the front door... dang it! Actually I totally agree. I think we need a nice post there on the corner of the porch for sure.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Looks good. Yes, do what you did in your photoshop mock up. It looks like it was all built at the same time.
