mdf for trim?
 
anyone ever use mdf to make their own trim? window and door casings? im looking into make some rpetty elaborate built up trim pieces that would cost too much for me for the amount i need. i know they sell trim and crown moulding made from mdf, but i never tried making my own. any pointers?

Hmmm.... I would recommend it.....as long as you have the right tools do do your fabricating and milling.
Yes, you can save alot of money. Put a good paint job on it and it will look as good as wood stock....


(FWIW: We have used Medex High density weather proof MDF for milling shelves...it's great, but costs about $50.00 for a HEAVY 4x8 sheet...)

well i tried it, and it worked great. it will save me a ton of money as i have 6 windows and 4 doors to do. it cut and routered very nice. then i just smoothed it all out with a tired sanding sponge. only bad part, the sawdust. i wish i could work oudoors with it.

MDF Trim
 
I used MDF planks that I got at my local HD to use as flat casings. I ripped them to length, rounded over one edge and put a wood back band on the other

Came out great
