Looking to buy this home. What can be done to the exterior?

I am making an offer on this home tomorrow: http://www.trulia.com/property/photo...H-44107#item-0

I was wondering what can be done to jazz up the exterior aside from painting it. I looked into window boxes and shutters, but neither seem to fit right with the close window distance on the tower. As it stands, this house is ugly, but I can't help but think that it's worth looking into.

Welcome to the forum.

You said anything aside from paint but what I see is screaming paint, three to four colors including window trim, sills, rosettes and a crown detail on top of that.

The lattice has to go too. Some kind of a multi colored raised panel detail to replace the lattice is would set that place off.

I have never had much of an eye for this stuff. What do you mean by rosettes and crown detail? These terms are new to me. This will be my first home so I am new to the scene.

I totally agree with the lattice. I was considering replacing the porch rails with wood and making it look much nicer. What do you mean by raised panel detail though?

When I look at the picture you posted I see a blank canvas, there really isn’t anything off limits with a Victorian.

Here’s a few pictures of one I just finished this summer. It was basically a one color house, flat window trim, lattice under the porch, with no railing for the steps.

The rosettes are green and the crown is above the window trim.

The railing balusters are not to code in most places but there are no codes here.

For looks you need some substantial posts over that front Porch.

I used Google Maps to take a drive down your street and saw some
great Victorians. You will get a lot more ideas if you don't drive, but take some long walks in your neighborhood.
