laundry chute - how do I get the door to swing back freely and rest in line

I changed the door on my laundry chute from being on top to being on the front face as show....

Question is how do I get the door to swing back freely and rest in line with the rest of the front face? I could do a double swing door hinge but I really don't need it to swing into the closet and that would leave a section hanging over the front face and be an eye sore.

Idea's?

Simplest way is to add strips of wood to act as stops on the inside of the chute and use reguler hindges at the top of the door.

Inset a 1/2" diameter button magnet in the bottom of the laundry chute door.

For a target sink a flathead screw in the chute. I would start with a #6 screw then if there is not enough magnetic force to align the door increase the screw size. For too much force, adjust the screw down.

The new door may require a fire-resistance rating, be self-closing and weatherstripped to stop a fire below from spreading to floor above. Check with your local fire Marshall or building department. That way you will be covered in a claim on your H.O. Insurance.
