Kitchen Remodel Planning

After I get finished with the Nursery, the wife wants me to tackle the kitchen!

Its a smaller kitchen with a weird layout. I have taken a bunch of photos in hope to spark ideas and throw around ideas here. It is nothing special right now just a plain jane kitchen.

I plan to possibly make an island like the one pictured below. That or ad more floor cabinets along the wall in the picture below that.

The way the door is, really makes things a little more difficult. Our main goal is to either paint the cabinets we have, and add more similar and paint them to match or get all new ones.

This door makes it difficult!

To the Left of where the refrigerator is the door to outside.

The cabinet directly right of the sink will be hopefully removed for a dishwasher. The cabinet is exactly 24" wide!

The small wall to the right houses the homes cold air ducts. Would be nice if this wall was gone!

How Would I need to go about painting these cabinets?

This is the dining area, the only plan for this area is to relocate the light above the table in the center of the window.

Any though on moving the sink to the island? Also I would replace the blind cabinets with corner or lazy Susan type to get a little better storage.

Your range should not be next to a wall. I think good design practice calls for a 12" min cabinet. You could get away with smaller, but the current arrangement must make using those right side burners a challenge with pot and pan handles.

I'll throw another suggestion at you.....think about relocating that door to the other side of the window.....where that brown cabinet now sits. Then you will get another corner for cabinets as well as a nice Run of cabinets under the window.

Not suggesting you buy there product, but Ikea has a simple to use free to down load design program then will even show you in 3D what it will look like.
It will even stop you trying to install a cabinet to close to something that needed a spacer.
You would at least loose a weeks time and use of the kitchen if you decide to strip and paint those cabinets and not have as long a lasting finish.

Check out http://www.houzz.com/ This site has more info on kitchen design than anybody could possibly absorb even over a lifetime.

And I second Joe's recommendation for the Ikea planning tool. Great free program.

I have a couple of questions...Is that back door and window facing
the backyard? That dining room is part of the kitchen, right?
Do you have a formal dining room?

The reason I ask the last question is because if the dining area pictured
is part of the kitchen you could extend some cabinets into that room as
well. They don't have to be as deep as regular kitchen cabs.

We did that in our house, we have a small galley kitchen and made
cabinets for the dining area that are shallow.

could you take a couple more pics...of the other side of the wall (across
from the sink) and a shot from the dining area looking into the kitchen.

I do want to relocate the range, Id like to fit the refrigerator in that spot.

I can get more photos if you like.

The door and window face our side yard. Our house has a weird layout.

The dining room is connected to the kitchen like shown.
