Insulating above a drop ceiling

Hi,
I have a drop ceiling with the above space going to the roof rafters. I want to build 2x4 frame work 6 inches above the tiles and staple r38 faced insulation in the frame work. My concern is that there will be an airspace between the tiles and the insulation which I believe needs some fire proof material touching the facing. Can I use fireproof 4 mil plastic against the facing to be legal??
I cannot use sheetrock because of the added weight and yes sheet rock is cheaper than drop ceiling tiles.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Your local B.D. would have the correct answer. Most minimum safety codes require a ceiling, check to be safe.

I installed accoustical ceilings for about 5 years in mostly commercial and industrial buildings and some residential basements. Whenever insulation was called for it was always unfaced batts that was just laid on top of the ceiling tiles and grid. This was not a fun job, especially on a hot summer day. Had to open tiles up and throw a batt up and start at one wall and roll it out. And work your way across using pipes to help place the itch.

Gary __________________ Clothes taking longer to dry? Clean the dryer screen in HOT water if using fabric softener sheets. They leave a residue that impedes air-flow, costing you money. Clean the ducting in the last six months? 17,000 dryer fires annually!
