Installing shower pan. How do I measure a mortar layer thickness?
I am remodeling my bathroom. I am going to install a new shower pan. The installation instruction says: "Place up to a 1/2" thick layer of mortar/thinset on the floor. Taper the mortar/thinset to 1/4" thick around the floor drain."
My question is how do I measure 1/2" thick layer? Do I have to use a trowel with no notches and somehow measure layer thickness? Or, can I use a 1/2" notched floor trowel?
When I set an acrylic shower base, I mix setting compound and rough lay it based on the base contours. I place a 4mil plastic over the top completely covering the compound. I place the base down over it and press it into position. Once it's set, I lift it up and look at the impression in the plastic. If there are no gaps, I put it back and let it dry. If there are gaps ,I repeat the procedure until I'm happy.
The excess will squeeze out if you haven't overloaded the floor.
