Installing bigger basement window

Getting around to gutting my basement for a remodel.

I have a rather small basement window that i'd like to replace with something bigger to let in a good amount of light , and use for emergency egress ( will not be a bed room down there, but it'll be a den / tv area )

Looking to do this DIY, if i comes down to paying contractor thousands i'll just leave the current window in.

What process required to acomplish this? from what you see in the pictures would i be able to go wider? or just longer top to bottom? both?

any insight would be great.

Thanks!

Not much at all, the bottom of the window is only maybe a few inches.

I'd have to dig a pit around it, which i know little about.

That's an older house there----You may not have working perimeter drains--this is needed if you add a window that extend
below the grade--You will need a window well and a drain---(and a perimeter drain for the window drain to go into)

If you have a perimeter drain--go for a taller window---No header issues----Mike---

I dont have any sort of permiter drain, I think my house was built in the early 50's.

So that being the case it's probably more of a hassle then it's worth then eh?

Anything is possible but you will have to start cutting into that block foundation.

If you don't have any place to drain the water that is going to run into the window well

you will be creating a big nightmare.

If you want to add a longer window that is above grade --you will need to add a header
strong enough to hold up the house above.

Steel flitch plate and another 2x10 might be the easiest.---Mike---

Installing bigger basement window

Decided to install an interior perimeter drain along the footers of inside my basement.

If I decide to still install a window well and larger window can i pipe the drain from the window well inside the basement and connect it to the perforated pipe under the slab on the inside of the basement , which leads to my sump pump?

Ask your local Building Department on the water.

Finish your basement to minimum safety Code; required window (for the basement) -44" above finish floor, etc...... http://publicecodes.citation.com/ico...9_3_sec010.htm

Im pretty sure around here you are REQURIED an egress window only if there is a bedroom down there, which there will be not. But im considering installing one for the natural light and boost the value of my renovation.

Might want to run that by your local B.D. as it has been required for many years, depends on which year's Code your finish basement will be inspected under fot the paper trail for you H.O. Insurance carrier and adding it as habitable floor space when selling.
