how to install vinyl of existing siding

I just purchased a house with wood clapboard siding. The paint is starting to peel and I also think it is lead based. I dont want to hire someone specialized in removing the lead paint so i wanted to cover it with vinyl. How do i go about doing this?

Come on now guy's! Just "buy and hang" probably won't work in this case. The current siding is "wood clapboard", but what is the vertical run (distance from one board's bottom edge to the adjacent board bottom edge) as compared to the proposed vinyl? Unless this was an exact match--you will have the nailing edge (top) of the vinyl sitting on the clapboard with some edges set-back and some edges standing proud. This will create a "ripple" effect on the vinyl when viewed from either side. IMO--I would nail "furring strips", 1x2's, vertically on 12" centers to nail the vinyl to. This is a good time to add the 3'8" rigid foam insulation to the exterior, it will help the "R" value some. Also--when using this method, there will be gaps at all edges between the vinyl and original siding. Be sure to seal all gaps created by placing vinyl on strips, over clapboard. David

I would never think of hiring a professional
to do it.
After all,its protecting the biggest investment
most of us ever make in our life.

Since minor leaks can cause severe and unseen damage
over time, the little bit of advice you receive on a
DYI site could end up costing more than getting
someone with experience to do it in the first place.

There's a lot more detail that needs to be addressed, most
learned after years of experience.

If anyone can do it, then it's also true that few can do it well.

Each of us have our own standards but it'd suggest the OP go to www.vinylsiding.org and read the .pdf 44-page installation manual to better his chances.
