Hardie Plank over insulation or not!!!

I am going to replace my old siding with Hardie Plank. When I took off the old siding the sides of the house still has, in great condition cedar clap board.
But on the front & back are the old big wood planks that in some areas have gaps.

So should I use felt paper & 1/2" isulation or is it not good to use insulation with hardie plank.

But I can't imagine just using felt paper.

Thanks Frank
