granite countertop stain? Is there anything that can be done?

I have a new ( to me ) house that has a 5 year old granite counter top.
It's real granite as far as I know... then again.. I know didly about granite.

It has a very noticeable stain in a bad spot... see pics:

( you can remove the _medium part of those links and get
bigger pics )

Is this spot something that can be removed or lessened? If so... how?

Thanks - jack

Try this:

It worked for a few tea stains that I had in my granite countertop.

Was the spot there when you looked/bought the house?

It's a foreclosure property. The bank has owned it and it's been vacant
for 16+ months. The stain has been there for at least 16 months... pretty
sure it's set.

The pic doesn't show it, but the stain is lighter in color than the
surrounding granite ( assume that's granite... could it be something
else ) and it's in a pretty much circular pattern... like a cup was sitting
there... but.. the stain itself looks like a whole lot of cracks... like
something heavy wad dropped... it still feels smooth as glass....

I've never had anything but formica for a counter top so I don't know
what might have caused the stain. I can get more pics if that will
help.
