Fridge Door Handles

We're doing a reno on our kitchen. We have an older fridge but still in good shape. Only downside to it is the handles are ugly.

What can I do about the handles? Are they easily removed?

My idea was to remove the existing handles and rivet a peice of stainless steel to the handle side and mount a newer style handle to that? Will that work?

Any ideas what I can do here?

Fridge Door Handles

Handles are usually held in place by 3 or more screws, im guessing the handles come to the top of the door and thats where you will find screws as for fitting some stainless, without actually seeing what you have thats impossible to answer.
