Alex, Welcome to the Forum.
Not sure of your question. If your question is how to layout an Elliptical
Arch or if it is Cutting an Elliptical Arch with a Router then here is the best
answer Iv'e ever seen.

framing around and for arch columns

No sorry (Palibob) maybe I did not make it clear; I want to know how to frame 2x4s around the arch to hold the column. I will be buying an arch kit so I don't have to cut it but its just the arch and I don't know enough about framing to be able to make it like the picture. I know its a pretty picture, but if you could look behind the arch and drywall, that's what I need to learn to do. I have attached another picture that just shows the framing (by the way that's not me in the pic). You can see the arch but now I have to make room for the column. That's what I need info on.

Thanks again for you help

Here is a quick sketch but it all depends on how the pre-made arch comes and whether it is engineered to be load bearing or if you need to add a header above to carry the load.

EDIT: After looking at your picture and my drawing again, I just realized that the short header piece directly above the column would actually need to be moved up inline with the bottom of the arch, or be a 2x4 or 2x6 (depending on wall thickness) on the flat rather than turned up, to be framed like you picture. Hope this makes sense.

Luke, thanks for the reply, but now I am confused by your last edit. The arch is not load bearing. The arch you see in the picture is all that comes. My confusion now is what you say about the cripples? (sp), and "on the flat rather than turned up". Could you please make another drawing to show what you mean?

Thanks
Alex

That type of arch with columns should all be done initially. It can be done after the arch is in, but it adds to the difficulty.

Yes sixteen, it will be framed and the arch installed along with the column all at the same time.
