Framed Posts

Hello all - we are changing the entrance to our house and are building a landing with stairs going down to grade. We are using 4x4 pressure treated posts extending full lenght from 4-5' above the landing to grade. The posts will serve as an attach point for the rail (hopefully this makes sense.) My question is - beef up the 4x4 posts by framing them out to look larger, maybe 8x8 or 12x12. We may wrap them in faux rock or some other material. What is the best way to frame these out and what material would you use? I would imagine some type of supports the length of the post at 90 degree angles (2x4s?). Would you use 1/2" or 3/4" plywood to "box it in"? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
