Fireplace Replacement
2 Attachment(s)
Hi all,

I am removing my free standing fireplace and replacing it with a wood stove. Is there any concerns with the chimney I need to know about? Attached are some photos of the fireplace and firestop.

No one has any advice for me?

I do not know the rules for Michigan. When I installed a fireplace insert (basically a wood stove) in my fireplace, I need a chimney liner installed, which was a double wall stainless steel liner. You have what looks like a galvanized riser in your house, I assume it goes through the roof. Around here, such a riser would need to be double wall, and there are specific clearances above the roof line. Normally I leave that to the installer, but if you are doing your own install, perhaps the company that sells you the stove knows the regulations.

As a last resort, you might want to talk to the local building inspector, especially if you are pulling a permit. That might know their own rules.

If you're looking for specialty remodeling projects like fixing your fireplace, you could start by checking out professionals like RSU Contractors. They've got examples of custom built fireplaces and other home remodeling projects on their website.
