fireplace mantle

gas fireplace needs a new mantle. planning a wood mantle (Poplar) and surround to be painted. Concern is limited space:- (approx. 4-5" on either side of the metal gas fireplace insert built into the wall.) All I have ever seen has a marble, granite, etc. spacer around the insert, then the wood mantle. Could I substitute Hardeboard for this, and paint it to match the wood? I'm assuming the Hardeboard would serve the same purpose as the Stone slabs I've seen around the gas fireplace insert and would meet code for fire prevention. There's drywall butting the insert now.....
Thanks for any advice you can give.

You should have no problem with that.

Hardiboard being cementious is fire retardant though not fire proof.
