Finding old base molding profile

Have a project where i need to replace some base molding in my house. I can not find the profile in any of the big box stores. Are there any tricks or tips in helping me find the profile?

Here's a trick: go to a lumber yard.

I stripped paneling from a room in a house I had that was built in 1953. It had an unusual profile molding. When they did the paneling, they tossed the molding. I found a salvager in town and got all the molding I needed.

Profiles change with time---look for a place that has millwork and trim---a large old fashioned lumber yard my have what you need ---In my area Owl Hardwood is the best spot for nicer trims.

If you have a lot of trim to replace go to a place that does millwork with a sample of your trim and if they don’t have a close match they could make a profile of your trim and mill you new pieces for a minimal charge.

Here on LI, the "minimal" charge is $300 for the setup fee, plus a cost per foot on the molding. If knives need to be made, add that to the cost.

:yes::yes::yes: Same here.

Which is why for short runs I have made my own molding to match with my router.
