family room lighting

Our house has a family room that is a remodeled garage. The size is approximately 20 x 25. The Ceiling looks like garbage what with the type of lighting and fan they hung. I want to pull down the multiple lights and fan and put up one central flush light.(I don't like the look of the multiple can lights.) It seems this light should be fairly large to light up the room. I'm thinking about 4 or 5 feet square, but I can't find any fixture that is that large. Am I wrong about the size I need?, Is there a reason fixtures that size aren't made? I found a fixture that is 1 foot by 2 feet (appox) for $250.00 I would need at least 4 of these side by side. Am I really looking at that price for lighting?Any suggestions?

I'm guessing there's little to no windows in this room? Being that it was a garage? Just one light in the middle of the room probably won't be very much, have you considered some wall mounted lights?

Indirect lighting mounted around the perimeter??? Can be fluorescent, LED, incandescent, etc. Hidden, yet very soft lighting.

Actually it has 1 window. It was those small multiple lights around the perimeter that I was wanting to avoid.... personal tastes. That is why I was looking for a LARGE flat against the ceiling fixture.I do also want to avoid the institutional look

I would actually advice putting mirrors in your room, to have more light, and give the space a bigger aspect...
I did to my living room because I dont have a lot of light, and it helps you use less electricity if you put your mirror in the right spot..
