exterior shutter size

I need to replace the exterior shutters on my home. I cannot find shutters that are the same size as the ones that are on my house currently. Since I am going to have to go with a different size, I need to know what width shutter would look best on windows that are 28-30 inches wide (excluding trim). The shutters only come in two width sizes: 12 inch and 15 inch. I have a colonial house with 12 sets of shutters so I don't want to make a mistake on the shutter size. Any advice would be appreciated.

Check a local building supply house for shutters. They usually have custom sizes available. Standard widths are 14-15", standard heights are usually about 3" apart.

If you were going with standard widths, I would guess 15" would make sense since it would look the most realistic on a 30" wide window. Anything less would be too narrow for functional shutters to actually close properly.

I'd suggest going with the 15" - as operagost mentioned, it's important that they look like they can cover the whole window when closed, even if they're decorative shutters.

Decorative shutters are a pet peeve of mine. Shutters are supposed to cover windows. The width on each side, to look at all authentic should be half the width of the window. The faux ones often look stupid they are so narrow and out of scale.
