Extending MBR over garage - quick ?

My garage has a truss roof with the joists 24" apart. I had the idea of putting a closet space in the garage roof void - i assume it would require that the flooring be supported by more than just these joists ? I haven't opened up an access to this space to look more closely...

Conceptually, the idea is simple: put a door between the mbr and dead space over the garage, put down flooring and rock walls and its good to go. Somehow i doubt its that easy

Thoughts?

Extending MBR over garage - quick ?

The rest of the house is 16" on center i believe. My neighbor has the same model home and they have this already (done at time of original construction) - frankly it seems very very easy - my only concern is the floor. Anyone know off hand what the requirements for flooring would be under IRC 2009? The space is currently dead space over the garage and would be a very (relatively) easy project... That would be something i could do over the holiday vacation pretty inexpensively...

Wow, this home improvement thing is addictive

You would need at least minimum a 2x10 flooring frame, since you just can't place a room on a truss system that is not engineered for that amount of weight. It would be like placing a full size car with five occupants up in the attic of your garage. Sooner or later the car will fall through.

Thanks for the reply - I came tothe same conclusion digging around as well. I am going to go down and get a copy of the plans for my house when i file the permit for the basememt. Thia way i have a better idea of what is in there without having to cut it open tk see where i could put in the floor joists.

Thanks!
