Exhaust vent question
 
Not really sure where to post this..


1. I have vinyl siding with vinyl soffit as well. I'm remodeling my bathroom and my old exhaust vent terminated behind the soffit . When installing my new exhaust fan and duct work is that acceptable to terminate it behind the vinyl sofft so that it's hidden? or do I need to have it actually terminate at the vinyl soffit.

2. Also, I have two bathrooms next to each other and both of the duct work exit in the same area. Would it be okay to tie them together near the end and have them exit out one vent or no?

It needs to be ran all the way outside not just close to it.

A better way would be to vent it out the roof.
And no you can not just connect them together.

Yea, I'm starting to lean towards the roof option since the air would just reenter the soffit.

No, it wouldn't. Bathroom exhaust fans have a flapper at their outlet so air or wind can't come back into the room.

Soffit venting is preferred. With roof venting, moisture can condense in the vent line and drip back into the room.

I was referring to the actual vinyl soffit. What's going to prevent it from exiting the vent and then rising straight back up into the attic through the vented soffit?

what does the exhaust fan manufacturer's specifications say?

this is what the 2009 International Residential Code requires:

R303.3 Bathrooms. Bathrooms, water closet compartments and other similar rooms shall be provided with aggregate glazing area in windows of not less than 3 square feet (0.3 m2), one-half of which must be openable.

Exception:
The glazed areas shall not be required where artificial light and a mechanical ventilation system are provided. The minimum ventilation rates shall be 50 cubic feet per minute (24 L/s) for intermittent ventilation or 20 cubic feet per minute (10 L/s) for continuous ventilation. Ventilation air from the space shall be exhausted directly to the outside.
