Drop ceiling panel cutting

I'm proceeding with laying out and installing my basement drop ceiling and have another question.

The panels I'm putting in (2x2), are sculpted on the perimeter so that they drop below the face of the runners and T's. I'm sure many are made this way. When I cut the panels for any partial panel openings I have, my cut edge is flat and doesn't drop in like the other 3 sides (or other 2 sides if it's a corner piece). Are there ways and/or special tools to get the same kind of sculpted edge on the trimmed sides?

Would I need to use a router or something to get a similar edge? I think the panels are also a mixture of foam and gypsum or similar and would dull a router type cutting tool.

Have you asked the manufacture or gone on there website and see what they suggest?

we used the same knife we cut them with. notch same as other sides

Jim,
I always use the drop down 2 x 2 panels when I do drop ceilings. When cutting an edge, I make a cut all the way through for the edge of the panel. Then I come in from that edge aprox. 3/8" and make a cut with a utility knife (sharp blade) aprox. 1/4" deep. Then I place the knife on its side and cut into the edge towards the partial cut I just made. You should be left with a 1/4" reveal to match the other three sides. It isn't that difficult and once you get in the hang of it, it becomes second nature.

That's one of the things I considered, (and what I'll try). I was afraid they might look kind of sloppy. But, with a 44 x 16 area I recon I'll get a lot of practice. Thanks!

Use a straightedge for the cut on the panel side that shows. Do not try to freehand them. And make sure you have a supply of sharp blades.

Forgot to mention I use a framing square when cutting the tiles. It's easy to hold on the tile and provides nice clean cuts.

And make sure your hands are clean each time! Found out the hard way.

If you have sweaty hands, baby powder helps. Or get some thin white cotton gloves.
