Door for top of cathedral ceiling stairway

I need to get ideas for what I can do for the top of a stairway (with cathedral ceiling). I need a way to shut it off during the winter, due to heating. I don't want to ruin the look of the house, because I will probably have to sell it in the relatively near future. When you come in the front door the first thing you see is the stairway. Also to make this more complicated-there is only one wall facing-on the right. To the left is another opening appoximately 4x4 with a sheet rock bottom. Thought I might could install glass in that section?? So the shape of the top is -l Well I can't do it on here, but an upside down L shape

you should have at least a 3' landing before the door.

For a temporary thing heavy insulated curtains may be the best.

why not frame on top of the half wall to make it a full wall and then in the remaining opening add a door that opens in the direction away from the stair well opening..

Thanks to all of you! I appreciate your time-this is a mess. I live in an area where there are not many contractors, and NO house market-or I would sell it. I don't need an upstairs. So I have to do the best I can
