We are in the design phase of a remodel/addition. And I have a question on ratio's.
I have a small living room 13' long x 16' wide. Current opening is a 6' arched throughway (no door) on one side of the room. We plan to change this to a centered opening that will be 9' wide. On either side will be a 3 1/2' wall. We plan to make this a cased opening.
This new opening will go into the dining room which is 15' long x 14' wide with a centered throughway into the hallways leading to the rest of the house. Right now this opening is spec'ed at 5'. Both rooms will have 8' ceilings.
The question is how big should we make this opening in the dining room so that it provides a good visual. Here is a photo of the visual affect I am trying to achieve...
