Ceiling tile removal - how hard?

One of the next projects on my list is getting rid of the horrible ceiling tile that the house has throughout the first floor. The mudroom and laundry room have just plain wood 2x4 ceilings - painted in the mudroom, plain in the laundry room - and even that looks better than the mismatched tiles.

Just wondering how hard it is to remove them. And any ideas on what's cheap and easy to replace it with? We've got a popcorn ceiling in the upstairs rooms which I hate, but I'm willing to leave that as is if I can just focus on the first floor tile ceiling. Horrible horrible horrible!
