Can we raise our attic ceiling?
I have a 1.5 story 1955 post-war Cade Cod-ish house with a built out and popped up attic space. The ceilings are 7 ft up there, and since we are planning to remodel it soon, I am looking into the possibility of raising the ceilings. Ideally I would love to vault them all the way up, but I don't think that is possible without a ridge beam, as far as I have gathered. I will definitely consult a structural engineer ultimately.
What are my options? I have attached pictures of the upper attic space and a little drawing of the design.
You can raise the roof to match the ridge, which would give you a flat roof and a taller ceiling height.
As far as the vaulted celing, it does'nt seem to make sense for that area.
Really need a engineer on site to look and suggest.
On some we have been able to do a scissor truss idea.
Scissor truss is a good idea. There is more cost and more construction, but it would give you the look you desire.
