Can I hang suspended ceiling at 2 levels in one room?

Hi all- I'm about ready to sheetrock three rooms in my big basement project, and shortly after that, it'll be on to hanging the drop ceiling.

One of the rooms has an area (due to major bathroom PVC drain pipes above) that will have to be hung at least 5 inches level below the joists - if not closer to *7* inches down. But I'd really like to keep the 2/3 of the room's ceiling that *isn't limited by this pipe area, higher -- like 2 or 3 inches off the joists.

Is there a way to 'terrace' or set two levels of ceiling, and then join them with a vertical suspended ceiling tile cut, so that the whole room doesn't have to hang so low? I think I've seen this done before, but can a 1st time DIY'er like me do it?

I'll be using standard Armstrong hardware from Lowe's. Thanks,
Mike

Do you know if Armstrong sells 90 degree rails/moldings that allow smooth 'vertical' paneling / closing of the gap between the two heights? Pretty easy to do?

They make rails that you can secure Drywall against, but as for placing the drop ceiling panels as a wall, seen it done, and after a while it really looks shoddy, when the panels start drying out over time.

Best bet there is to build a small framed bulkhead and drywall it.

All makes good sense. Small bulkhead drywalled sounds like the way to go. Thanks gregzoll and sixeightten

Build it out of steel framing, not wood, since it will be more light weight, and still hold up like wood, but does not shrink like wood framing members do over time.
